Wood Box & Crating Terminology

You may never need to know most of this, but if you want to become a Crate Geek, here it is!

Crating Terminology

Standards That Easy Crate Follows

These are NOT light reading, but if you're interested in stepping into the manufacturing of commercial wooden transport containers (what we usually call 'crates') then this is a great start.

PPP-B-601H Basic Plywood Boxes
PPP-B-601H Amendment 1
PPP-B-621D Basic Plywood Boxes
PPP-B-621D Amendment 3

A Couple More Common Standards

Easy Crate conforms to the '601' and '621' standards above. Those two are the basis for far more than half of the crates manufactured worldwide. Here's the next two most common standards.

MIL-B-26195C Basic Plywood Boxes
MIL-B-26195C Amendment 1
MIL-C-104C Basic Plywood and Lumber Crates
MIL-C-104C Amendment 1

To Take a Deep Dive...

All of the above standards can be used to make safe and cost effective containers but they're officially retired. ASTM International has taken the responsibility of maintaining and improving all of the former US government standards for wooden boxes, cases, and crates including related standards for internal packaging and handling. Each of ASTM's standards, including D6251 (formerly the 601) and D6880 (formerly the 621) go through a rigorous review process every five years. To get all the latest guidance for packing and crating, take a look at ASTM Volume 15.10. The latest Easy Crate update always conforms to the latest ASTM standards.
